At Doomben in Brisbane, Eliza Park's Gr1 Galaxy-winning stallion Magnus (Flying Spur-Scandinavia, by Snippets) celebrated an elite success when 4YO gelding Malaguerra (Magnus-Tennessee Morn, by Bletchingly) kicked back strongly to score by 0.1-length for trainers Lee & Anthony Freedman in the $500,000 Gr1 BTC Cup (1200m) for 3YO+, over 5YO gelding Dothraki (Mossman-Volantis, by Flying Spur) & 3YO gelding Japonisme (Choisir-Haiku, by Encosta de Lago). A $32,000 yearling consigned by Ballarto Lodge at the 2013 Inglis VOBIS Gold Yearling Sale, Malaguerra took his record to 10 wins (including the Gr3 ATC Star Kingdom Stakes & Listed Bob Hoysted Handicap) & 2 placings from 18 starts for $758,100 earnings. "This is great," Hall of Fame trainer Freedman said. "But I didn't think he'd be a Group One horse a quickly as he has been." Freedman, who was celebrating his first Gr1 winner since preparing Speed Gifted to win the 2009 Metropolitan Handicap in Sydney, said Malaguerra would have his next start in a fortnight in the Gr1 Doomben 10,000 before heading to the Gr1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) on 11 June.
