At Ascot in West Australia, Gr1-winning & 4-time Gr1-placed Vinery Stud stallion Mossman (Success Express-Lichen Lady, by Twig Moss) celebrated an elite Gr1 success when 8YO gelding Buffering (Mossman-Action Annie, by Anabaa) scored by 1-length for trainer Robert Heathcote in the $1 million Gr1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) for 3YO+, over 7YO gelding Watermans Bay (Eternity Range-Parisian Princess, by Ron Bon) & 5YO gelding Fast 'N' Rocking (Fastnet Rock-For the Good Times, by Hennessy). Trainer Robert Heathcote was in awe of his sprinting marvel who was celebrating his sixth top-flight success. "Eight-years-old and six Group 1s now," Heathcote said. "I am just so incredibly proud, what a wonderful animal. He has won another Group 1." Heathcote said Buffering would now head to the rich Magic Millions carnival in January before a possible overseas campaign that would include both Dubai and Ascot. "I got a phone call from Dubai the other day and I am keen to go there now in March," Heathcote said. "Then there is a place on the other side of Dubai – it is called Ascot. He is such a wonderful horse and if he is sound and happy and racing with the enthusiasm that he is then we will enjoy the journey." He added: "We have the Magic Millions to head to now, so we will get him home and if he comes through that in good order – Dubai is a nice place." This was the remarkable Buffering's second Winterbottom success after landing the race in 2013 and took his record to 18 wins (including the Gr1 Winterbottom Stakes, Gr1 Moir Stakes, Gr1 VRC Sprint Classic, Gr1 Manikato Stakes, Gr2 BRC Victory Stakes, Gr2 Schillaci Stakes, Gr2 Roman Consul Stakes & Gr3 Ian McEwen Stakes) & 17 placings (including the Gr1 BTC Cup, Gr1 AJ Moir Stakes, Gr1 Stradbroke Handicap - twice, Gr1 Doomben 10,000 - thrice, Gr1 William Reid, Gr1 Newmarket, Gr1 Lightning T.J. Smith Stakes & Gr1 Patinack Classic) from 50 starts for $5,833,281 earnings. Buffering was a $22,000 purchase by Paul Willetts at the 2009 Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale from the draft of Racetree.
