At Trentham in New Zealand, Waikato Stud's Cox Plate winning stallion Savabeel (Zabeel-Savannah Success, by Success Express) celebrated an elite Gr1 success when 5YO gelding Kawi (Savabeel-Magic Time, by Volksraad) scored by a long neck for trainer Allan Sharrock in the NZ$200,000 Gr1 Thorndon Mile (1600m) for 3YO+, over 4YO mare Stole Dance (Alamosa-Songbird, by Black Minnaloushe) & 5YO mare Sports Illustrated (Fast 'n' Famous-Pin Up, by Pins). Kawi took his record to 11 wins (including the Gr1 Zabeel Classic, Gr1 Makfi Challenge Stakes, Gr3 Taranaki Cup & Listed Anniversary Handicap) and 7 placings (including the Gr1 Easter Handicap) from 22 starts for NZ$660,600 earnings. Trainer Allan Sharrock sounded an ominous warning to Kawi's future rivals, saying the handsome son of Savabeel will be even better next time out, reports NZ Racing Desk. "He was fractionally fresh and there's another twist in him yet for the Herbie Dyke," Sharrock said. Kawi will step back up to 2000m next month in the Gr1 Herbie Dyke Stakes at Te Rapa, a trip he successfully mastered in the Gr1 Zabeel Classic at Ellerslie on Boxing Day. "He's a beauty, a very good horse," Sharrock said. "He doesn't do it by much, but he gets the job done. He's probably the best I've had."
