At Flemington in Melbourne, multiple US Gr1-winning sprinter & Darley shuttler Street Boss (Street Cry-Blushing Ogygian, by Ogygian) celebrated an elite success when 5YO gelding The Quarterback (Street Boss-Soorena, by Encosta de Lago) scored by 0.2-length for trainer Robbie Griffiths in the $1.25 million Gr1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) for 3YO+, over fellow 5YO geldings Black Heart Bart (Blackfriars-Sister Theresa, by At Talaq) & Chautauqua (Encosta de Lago-Lovely Jubly, by Lion Hunter). The Quarterback took his record to 8 wins (including the Listed Dilmah Earl Grey Stakes & Listed VRC Kensington Stakes) and 7 placings (including the Gr3 Manfred Stakes & Gr3 CS Hayes Stakes) from 24 starts for $1,288,250 earnings. The Quarterback, who is a half-brother to Gr2 Tulloch Stakes winner Phillipi (Host), was purchased by Griffiths for $120,000 at the 2012 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale from the draft of Makybe Racing & Breeding. The win also represented a special milestone for Griffiths, who was celebrating his first Gr1 winner as a trainer. "It's brilliant to be put in the same echelon as other trainers. It's what we do it for - it's nice to be recognised at that level," Griffiths told Racing.com. "This year's been outstanding, we've had some really good horses and it's finally come off." He added: "To win a Group 1 anywhere would have been a dream come true, but to do it at Headquarters in the best sprint race in Australia is amazing."
