At Caulfield in Melbourne, Scenic Lodge's VRC Derby-winning sire Blackfriars (Danehill-Kensington Gardens, by Grosvenor) celebrated an elite success when 6YO gelding Black Heart Bart (Blackfriars-Sister Theresa, by At Talaq) resumed with a brilliant 1.25-length win for trainer Darren Weir in the $500,000 NZB Gr1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) for 3YO+, over 6YO mare Rising Romance (Ekraar-Post Romance, by Postponed) & 4YO entire Mahuta (Flying Spur-Vahine, by Zabeel). Black Heart Bart improved his record to 13 wins (including the Gr1 Goodwood Gr2 Lee Steere Stakes, Gr3 Victoria Handicap, Gr3 WATC Northerly Stakes, Listed Birthday Stakes, Listed Bunbury Stakes, Listed Pinjarra Classic, Listed Cyril Flower Stakes, Listed WATC Carbine Club of WA Stakes & Listed WATC Summer Scorcher) and 11 placings (including the Gr1 Stradbroke Handicap, Gr1 Newmarket Handicap, Gr1 All Aged Stakes & Gr3 WATC Asian Beau Stakes) from 32 starts for $2,280,950 earnings. "He has been a great horse for the stable. I have to thank the owners for sending him over," trainer Darren Weir said of the reigning West Australian Horse of the Year. "He is a pretty straight forward horse to train, and that's how he races as well. He gives his all and it was a great win today." Weir confirmed that Black Heart Bart's primary spring target is the Gr1 WS Cox Plate (2040m) to be run at Moonee Valley on 22 October. "The owners are very keen to run in the Cox Plate so we will follow a path towards that race," he said. Black Heart Bart, who was sold for $20,000 at the 2012 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale, is out of a half-sister to New Zealand Oaks winner Savannah Success, dam of Cox Plate winner and outstanding young stallion Savabeel and Gr1-placed Tamalee Farm stallion Arlington.
