At Flemington in Melbourne in front of over 60,000 racegoers yesterday, Arrowfield Stud's deceased Gr1-placed stallion Beneteau (Redoute's Choice-Slice Of Paradise, by Encosta de Lago) celebrated an elite success when 3YO filly Lasqueti Spirit (Beneteau-Supriym Story, by General Nediym) scored a shock 3.75 length win at odds of 100-1 for trainer Lee Curtis in the $1 million Gr1 VRC Crown Oaks (2500m) for 3YO fillies, over fellow 3YO fillies Harlow Gold (Tavistock-Belongs in Lights, by Belong to Me) & Eleonora (Makfi-Sopra Tutto, by Van Nistelrooy). A maiden heading into yesterday's race, Lasqueti Spirit improved her record to 1 win and 4 placings (including the Listed ATC Fernhill Handicap) from 10 starts for $635,620 earnings. Lasqueti Spirit was purchased for $150,000 at the 2015 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale by her trainer Lee Curtis, who incidentally had set out to buy a Golden Slipper filly - not a stamina-laden classic contender. "This is unreal, it's such a thrill. It's what we get out of bed for," trainer Lee Curtis told racing.com. "We had a lot of confidence in her. She lacks a turn of foot but she has class in every other aspect..thank god she can stay!" He added: "We had nothing to lose. She was 100-1, one bloke got 500-1 about her. We could afford to take a gamble and ride her a bit silly and if it came off we are geniuses but if it doesn't who cares."
