At Flemington in Melbourne, Coolmore's former Gr1-winning Champion Australian Sire Fastnet Rock (Danehill-Piccadilly Circus, by Royal Academy) celebrated an elite success when 5YO entire Awesome Rock (Fastnet Rock-Awesome Planet, by Giant's Causeway) scored by 0.75 length for trainers Leon & Troy Corstens in the $2 million Gr1 Emirates Stakes (2000m) for 3YO+, over 5YO gelding Hauraki (Reset-Youthful Presence, by Dehere) & 3YO colt Seaburge (Sebring-Polska, by Encosta de Lago). Atoning for his controversial protest defeat in the Gr1 Australian Cup earlier in the year, Awesome Rock improved his record to 4 wins (including the Gr2 Dato' Tan Chin Nam Stakes & Listed Symphony Stakes) and 7 placings (including the Gr1 Australian Cup, Gr2 VRC Sires' Produce Stakes, Gr3 David Jones Cup & Gr3 MRC Caulfield Guineas Prelude) from 25 starts for $2,028,720 earnings. "We've said it all the way along that he is a beautiful animal and when we lost the Australian Cup we were desperate to get the Group 1 he deserved," co-trainer Troy Corstens told racing.com. Awesome Rock was purchased by Spicer Thoroughbreds for $575,000 at the 2013 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Newgate Farm.
