At Rosehill Gardens in Sydney, Darley's multiple Gr1-winning shuttler Medaglia d'Oro (El Prado-Cappucino Bay, by Bailjumper) celebrated an elite success when 3YO Godolphin colt Astern (Medaglia d'Oro-Essaouira, by Exceed and Excel) scored a fast-finishing 2.3 length win for trainer John O'Shea in the $1 million Gr1 Golden Rose (1400m) for 3YOs, over 3YO filly Omei Sword (High Chaparral-Irish Lights, by Fastnet Rock) & fellow 3YO colt and stable-mate Impending (Lonhro-Mnemosyne, by Encosta de Lago). Astern - who secured his future as a stallion prospect with this brilliant maiden top flight victory - advanced his record to 5 wins (including the Gr2 Run To The Rose, Gr2 Silver Slipper Stakes & Gr3 Kindergarten Stakes) from 6 starts for $1,030,150 earnings. Trainer John O'Shea said Astern would now head towards next month's Gr1 Caulfield Guineas in Melbourne. "He's a special colt," O'Shea said. "We will take him to Melbourne for the Caulfield Guineas Prelude. I'd suggest he'd probably run a mile at Caulfield on today's performance." A homebred for Darley, Astern is the third foal to race from the well bred Exceed And Excel mare Essaouira, dam of fellow Godolphin galloper and stakes placed 3YO Mogador (Lonhro). Essaouira is out of the Gr2 Magic Night Stakes winner Alizes (Rory's Jester) from the brilliant Gr1 winning sprinting mare La Baraka (Euclase), herself a daughter of champion filly Triscay (Marscay). Triscay won 13 stakes races, five of which were at Gr1 level, including the Australian Oaks and Australian Guineas.
