At Flemington in Melbourne, Eliza Park's Gr1 Galaxy-winning stallion Magnus (Flying Spur-Scandinavia, by Snippets) celebrated an elite success when 5YO gelding Malaguerra (Magnus-Tennessee Morn, by Bletchingly) held off a late challenge to score a narrow 0.1 length win for trainer Peter Gelagotis in the $1 million Gr1 Darley Classic (1200m) for 3YO+, over the very unlucky 4YO entire Spieth (Thorn Park-Stella Livia, by Titus Livius) & fellow 5YO gelding Fell Swoop (Not a Single Doubt-Touched in Flight, by Fasliyev). A $32,000 yearling consigned by Ballarto Lodge at the 2013 Inglis VOBIS Gold Yearling Sale, Malaguerra improved his record to 11 wins (including the Gr1 BTC Cup, Gr3 ATC Star Kingdom Stakes & Listed Bob Hoysted Handicap) & 3 placings from 21 starts for $1,432,600 earnings. "I'm very numb at the moment. He's an amazing horse," Gelagotis told "And I want to pay special tribute to the Freedman brothers. They have obviously prepared this horse very well and given me a walk-up start with a really nice horse." He added: "A lot of credit's got to go to them."
