At Ascot in Perth, West Australia, Widden Stud's Gr1 Golden Slipper-winning stallion Stratum (Redoutes Choice-Bourgeois, by Luskin Star) celebrated an elite success when 5YO entire Stratum Star (Stratum-Purely Spectacular, by Pins) scored by a nose trainer Darren Weir in the $1 million Gr1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) for 3YO+, over 4YO gelding Scales Of Justice (Not a Single Doubt-Beymatilla, by Umatilla) & 4YO mare Perfect Reflection (More Than Ready-Reflected Image, by Bluebird). Stratum Star, who was a $165,000 purchase by Rick Hore-Lacy at the 2013 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Widden Stud, improved his record to 6 wins (including the Gr1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, Gr3 David Jones Cup & Listed Gothic Stakes) & 15 placings (including the Gr1 Futurity Stakes, Gr1 Toorak Handicap, Gr1 Memsie Stakes, Gr2 Alister Clarke Stakes, Gr1 Australian Guineas, Gr3 CS Hayes Stakes, Gr2 Sandown Guineas & Gr2 Carbine Club Stakes) from 33 starts for $1,652,460 earnings. However, Stratum Star's win was not without controversy. Racing and Wagering Western Australia stewards immediately launched an inquiry into Douglas Whyte's ride on Scales Of Justice after the multiple Hong Kong champion jockey appeared to misjudge the finish and not ride his mount out. Whyte has pleaded not guilty to a charge of failing to ride his mount out to the end of the race.
