At Flemington in Melbourne, unbeaten European Champion juvenile & dual Gr1-winning Darley shuttler Teofilo (Galileo-Speirbhean, by Danehill) celebrated an elite success when 4YO entire Palentino (Teofilo-Palatine Hill, by Palace Music) scored by 1 length for trainer Darren Weir in the $500,000 Gr1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) for 3YO+, over 6YO geldings Black Heart Bart (Blackfriars-Sister Theresa, by At Talaq) & He Or She (Kendel Star-Danessa, by West Point). Palentino, who was purchased by Darren Weir for $85,000 at the 2014 Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling Sale from the draft of Macleay Thoroughbred Stud, improved his record to 4 wins (including the Gr1 Australian Guineas & Listed Hilton Resorts & Hotels Stakes) and 3 placings (including the Gr2 MVRC Alister Clark Stakes) from 10 starts for $971,610 earnings. In securing his first Gr1 victory for new owners Sun Stud, Darren Weir confirmed Palentino's main target was the Gr1 WS Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on 22 October. "The Makybe Diva was the race he was aimed towards, and if he measured up, he'd head to the Cox Plate," Weir told "Sun Stud have a massive investment in the horse. To win a mile race as a four-year-old, it's very important for his stud career." He added: "And I don't think it'll be the last one [Gr1] he wins either."
