At Rosehill Gardens in Sydney on a heavy track, Arrowfield Stud's Gr1-winning stallion Manhattan Rain (Encosta de Lago- Shantha's Choice, by Canny Lad) celebrated an elite success when star 2YO filly She Will Reign (Manhattan Rain-Courgette, by Charge Forward) scored by 2.3 lengths for trainer Gary Portelli and jockey Ben Melham in the world's richest juvenile race – the $3.5 million Gr1 Golden Slipper (1200m) for 2YOs - over fellow 2YO fillies Frolic (Husson-Leveller, by Redoute's Choice) & Tulip (Pierro-Musidora, by Rock of Gibraltar). A $20,000 bargain purchase by Darby Racing at the 2016 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, She Will Reign improved her record to 4 wins (including the Gr2 Silver Slipper Stakes & Listed (R) Inglis Nursery) and 1 placing (including the Gr2 Silver Slipper Stakes) from 5 starts for $2,555,150 earnings. "This is the race that defines a trainer I believe," said trainer Gary Portelli who was celebrating his first Slipper win. "I've been around a long time but I've finally got a Golden Slipper winner." He added: "This game has taken me a long way…It goes to show anyone out there who is not sure what they're doing in life that if you like something and want to do something, stick at it, work hard and days like this might come." Jockey Ben Melham said: "It's an incredible feeling. I've won a few Group Ones now but this is my first major…she's an exceptional filly."
