On day one of The Championships at Royal Randwick in Sydney, highly talented 6YO US-bred gelding It's Somewhat (Dynaformer-Sometime, by Royal Academy) finally broke through at the highest level when scoring a front running 0.5 length win for trainer John O'Shea in Australia's premier mile race - the $3 million Gr1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) for 3YO+ - over fellow 6YO geldings Happy Clapper (Teofilo-Busking, by Encosta de Lago) & Sense of Occasion (Street Sense-Saywaan, by Zabeel). The Godolphin-owned It's Somewhat improved his record to 8 wins (including the Gr2 Ajax Stakes, Gr3 Craven Plate & Gr3 Neville Sellwood Stakes) and 10 placings (including the Gr1 Doomben Cup & Gr1 George Main Stakes) from 31 starts for $2,893,679 earnings. Trainer John O'Shea and jockey Zac Purton decided pre-race that the best place to be was on the fence and in front and that is exactly how it worked out as It's Somewhat kicked clear in the straight to hold off the late challenge of Happy Clapper. "We decided we had to ride the race according to how the track was playing and Zac pulled out a perfect ride," O'Shea told Godolphin.com. "It was a tremendous team effort by everyone at home and everyone here on the day."
