At Caulfield in Melbourne, Scenic Lodge's VRC Derby-winning sire Blackfriars (Danehill-Kensington Gardens, by Grosvenor) celebrated an elite success when 6YO gelding Black Heart Bart (Blackfriars-Sister Theresa, by At Talaq) scored by 2.5 lengths for trainer Darren Weir in the $500,000 Gr1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) for 3YO+, over fellow 6YO gelding He Or She (Kendel Star-Danessa, by West Point) & 6YO mare Lucia Valentina (Savabeel-Staryn Glenn, by Montjeu). Black Heart Bart improved his record to 143 wins (including the Gr1 Memsie Stakes, Gr1 Goodwood Gr2 Lee Steere Stakes, Gr3 Victoria Handicap, Gr3 WATC Northerly Stakes, Listed Birthday Stakes, Listed Bunbury Stakes, Listed Pinjarra Classic, Listed Cyril Flower Stakes, Listed WATC Carbine Club of WA Stakes & Listed WATC Summer Scorcher) and 12 placings (including the Gr1 Makybe Diva Stakes, Gr1 Stradbroke Handicap, Gr1 Newmarket Handicap, Gr1 All Aged Stakes & Gr3 WATC Asian Beau Stakes) from 34 starts for $2,672,950 earnings. Weir said Black Heart Bart would use the Gr1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) on 8 October as his final lead-up to the Gr1 WS Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on 22 October. "It's good to see him run through the line like that," trainer Darren Weir told racing.com. "I never had any doubts about the 1800 metres. I though he ran really well last start, he was just beaten by a better horse on the day [Palentino]." He added: "We will go to the Caulfield Stakes now. He is going to start coming up against stronger opposition so he will have to keep running like he did today to be competitive in a Cox Plate." Black Heart Bart, who was sold for $20,000 at the 2012 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale, is out of a half-sister to New Zealand Oaks winner Savannah Success, dam of Cox Plate winner and outstanding young stallion Savabeel and Gr1-placed Tamalee Farm stallion Arlington.
